SYRACUSE, N.Y. A lunchtime stabbing at Brooklyn Pickle sent emergency crews rushing to the 1600 block of West Genesee Street on Thursday, leaving one man seriously injured and prompting a citywide police response—on what was meant to be a celebratory day for the iconic Syracuse deli.

According to emergency radio traffic and CAD dispatch records, the incident occurred shortly after 12:00 PM inside the busy restaurant, where Brooklyn Pickle was hosting its 50th Anniversary Celebration featuring $5 sandwiches, 50¢ deals, and commemorative T-shirts for in-store purchases.

Altercation Sparked by Photo

Witnesses and initial reports indicate that the stabbing was triggered by a dispute after the victim took a photo of the line inside the restaurant. The suspect reportedly became upset over the photo being taken and confronted the man. The confrontation escalated quickly and ended with the victim being stabbed in the head.

Emergency Response

Syracuse Police and AMR Ambulance were dispatched within minutes of a 911 call reporting the stabbing. Responders arrived to find the victim suffering from significant stab wounds. Bystanders had attempted to provide first aid while awaiting emergency services.

According to initial 911 dispatch information, Syracuse Police responded to a call for menacing on Tallman Street at approximately 3:31 a.m. on Saturday, May 10, 2025.

At 6:50 a.m., the Onondaga County 911 Center issued a public warning, alerting residents near the scene that law enforcement was actively managing a situation and requesting the public remain indoors. A formal Shelter-in-Place Warning was then issued by civil authorities for Onondaga County, effective from 7:01 a.m. to 9:01 a.m.

"This message is not intended to alarm you, but to advise you the Syracuse Police Department has a police situation near Tallman and Rich Streets," the automated alert stated. "Residents are requested to shelter in place until further notice. Thank you for your assistance."

As of this report, Syracuse Police have not released additional details regarding the nature of the incident or whether any arrests have been made. There were no immediate reports of injuries.

Update:

According to scanner traffic, the incident began when a caller to 911 reported that a Black male had pulled a gun on him. Syracuse Police dispatched multiple units to the area around 4:00 a.m. and established a perimeter near Tallman and Rich Streets.

At 6:50 a.m., a shelter-in-place was officially issued. As the situation continued, additional units from other areas were requested around 7:00 a.m. to assist with blocking intersections near the scene. A second request for backup was made at 7:40 a.m.

During the response to this incident, officers in the area were also managing a physical domestic call, as well as a foot pursuit involving the suspect tied to the Tallman Street report. That subject was taken into custody at approximately 7:40 a.m.

Due to the large-scale police presence and resource allocation, other 911 calls during this period experienced delays in response.

Breaking News: Syracuse Police Initiate Pursuit of Suspect in Black SUV Syracuse Police initiated a pursuit of a suspect driving a black SUV this evening at approximately 6:50 PM. The suspect entered I690 Eastbound and continued onto i481 south, before returning to the city and leading police on a chase through several streets. However, the police lost sight of the suspect near Lexington Ave. At this point, the Syracuse Police moved their investigation to an encrypted channel to prevent the suspect from being able to monitor their search. Residents in the area are advised to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activity to the authorities. We will continue to update this story as more information becomes available.

Update 7:15PM: Syracuse Police are utilizing their K9 Units to investigate a few areas along the pursuit route to investigate possible objects thrown from the vehicle during the pursuit.
