Residents in the area of Tallman and Rich Streets in Syracuse were advised to shelter in place early Saturday morning due to an active police situation involving a reported menacing incident.

According to initial 911 dispatch information, Syracuse Police responded to a call for menacing on Tallman Street at approximately 3:31 a.m. on Saturday, May 10, 2025.

At 6:50 a.m., the Onondaga County 911 Center issued a public warning, alerting residents near the scene that law enforcement was actively managing a situation and requesting the public remain indoors. A formal Shelter-in-Place Warning was then issued by civil authorities for Onondaga County, effective from 7:01 a.m. to 9:01 a.m.

"This message is not intended to alarm you, but to advise you the Syracuse Police Department has a police situation near Tallman and Rich Streets," the automated alert stated. "Residents are requested to shelter in place until further notice. Thank you for your assistance."

As of this report, Syracuse Police have not released additional details regarding the nature of the incident or whether any arrests have been made. There were no immediate reports of injuries.

According to scanner traffic, the incident began when a caller to 911 reported that a Black male had pulled a gun on him. Syracuse Police dispatched multiple units to the area around 4:00 a.m. and established a perimeter near Tallman and Rich Streets.

At 6:50 a.m., a shelter-in-place was officially issued. As the situation continued, additional units from other areas were requested around 7:00 a.m. to assist with blocking intersections near the scene. A second request for backup was made at 7:40 a.m.

During the response to this incident, officers in the area were also managing a physical domestic call, as well as a foot pursuit involving the suspect tied to the Tallman Street report. That subject was taken into custody at approximately 7:40 a.m.

Due to the large-scale police presence and resource allocation, other 911 calls during this period experienced delays in response.
