Flash Flood Warning Issued for Parts of Central New York

CORTLAND, N.Y. — June 22, 2025 — The National Weather Service (NWS) in Binghamton has issued a Flash Flood Warning for several counties in Central New York, in effect until 10:45 a.m. Saturday.

Heavy thunderstorms moving through the region have already dropped between 1.5 and 2.5 inches of rain, with flash flooding either underway or expected to begin shortly. The warning includes:

Northwestern Chenango County
Cortland County
Southwestern Madison County
Southeastern Onondaga County

Radar indicated the heaviest rain falling over Cortland County and surrounding areas as of 7:39 a.m. Officials warn of rapidly rising water levels in small creeks and streams, as well as flooding in urban areas, roads, and other low-lying spots with poor drainage.

Areas at risk include:
Cortland, Homer, Preble, Scott, Truxton, Solon, Cincinnatus, McGraw, Willet, Cuyler, Tully, Pitcher, Taylor, Fabius, East Freetown, De Ruyter, East Homer, McDonough, Pharsalia, and Deruyter.

The NWS urges motorists not to attempt driving through flooded roadways, noting that most flood-related deaths occur in vehicles. “Turn around, don’t drown,” is the emphasized safety message.

Campers, hikers, and those near streams or creeks should take extra caution as water levels may rise quickly with little warning.
