SYRACUSE — An early-morning fire damaged a two-story home on Highland Street Wednesday and injured a Syracuse firefighter who slipped on icy conditions at the scene, according to the Syracuse Fire Department.
Firefighters were dispatched at 4:14 a.m. on Jan. 21, 2026, after an alarm activation at 212 Highland St. Crews arrived to find flames burning at the front of the house. The department issued a “Signal 99,” meaning the fire was confirmed as a working structure fire and additional crews were requested.
Firefighters began extinguishing the fire from the outside and then moved inside to check the building and search for anyone who might be trapped. Officials said the main fire at the front of the home was knocked down quickly, but flames had spread to the second floor. Crews located that fire and put it out, then checked inside walls for hidden fire spread — often called checking for “extension,” when fire travels into spaces not immediately visible.
The fire was brought under control in about 10 minutes. It took roughly an hour to fully extinguish remaining hot spots and confirm the fire was completely out.
The building, described as a large wood-frame residence, sustained fire and water damage at the front, along with smoke and water damage throughout. Fire officials said the home was unoccupied at the time, and searches confirmed no victims were inside.
Fire investigators determined the fire started on the front porch, but the cause remains under investigation.
No civilian injuries were reported. One firefighter was taken to Crouse Hospital with fall-related injuries caused by icy conditions. The firefighter’s condition was not released.
Crews remained on scene for more than two hours for cleanup and to assist investigators.
